Signs above each recycling bin at Cart’m match the categories listed below. The signs define what is and is not acceptable within each category.
Recycling contamination is a big issue! For the health and safety of our staff and volunteers, please read signs carefully and sort items into the correct bins. A staff membrer or volunteer would be happy to answer your questions about where to recycle an item and why it is categorized as so.
NOTE: Items in red are recyclable within another category at Cart’m. Please check with staff before tossing in the trash!
PAPER Cardboard = brown bags and corrugated cardboard
Grayboard = non-corrugated board, cereal boxes, egg cartons, berry boxes, dog food bags okay NO compostable cups (These are made of corn gluten)
Newspaper/Magazines = slick or glossy including catalogs, phone books, unprinted newspaper
used for packing material, clean newspaper and inserts. NO twine, office paper, paper or plastic bags
Mixed Paper = mixture of all recyclable paper generated within an office incl. window envelopes
Aseptic = milk cartons, ice cream cartons, juice boxes, white paper to go boxes, tofu containers. NO bags (dog food or other)return to index
PLASTIC Thin Film = plastic bags, bubble wrap, stretch wrap NO cellophane
NO plastic containers or lids
Mixed Plastic = plastic containers with recycle symbol #s 1-7 NO motor oil, pesticide, or other toxic substance container regardless of #
NO compostable PLA containers (These are made from corn gluten)
NO styrofoam PS#6 (meat trays, egg cartons)
Milk Jugs = milk jugs only
Deposit Plastic Bottles = carbonated beverage containers worth $.05 in OR
Rigid Plastic = non-food grade plastic, and plastic without symbol (toys, cd cases, chairs and more)
GLASS Bottles and jars only!
Brown Glass = Check color carefully. MUST be absolute brown.
Green Glass = When in “color doubt” place in green! Includes: blue, amber, green, yellow, red
Clear Glass = Bottles and jars only NO wine glasses, light bulbs, window glass, or ceramic

TIN and ALUMINUM
Teflon lined aluminum = Must be aluminum and white lined – primarily cat food cans NO aluminum beverage cans
Tin cans = Tin cans only. They are magnetic!
Aluminum cans = aluminum beverage containers They are NOT magnetic!
Aluminum foil = aluminum baking pans and foil only NO food residue
NO silver colored bags

Deposits form an important part of our revenue stream.
ELECTRONICS No charge for computers, monitors and televisions. We have small charges for other items because we must pay fees and transportation to handle them.
