CART’M
Recycling, a
non-profit community organization, runs the area’s free
recycling drop-off center as well as a resale store specializing in
used building materials, household items, books, toys, tools, hardware,
art/craft supplies, electronics, furniture and all manner of eclectic
and excentric items. These items are brought into the center by
community members or rescued from dump loads. We also run Manzanita
Transfer Station - aka “The Dump” - as a franchise
from Tillamook County.

Spirit Mountain offers $25,000
incentive grant
Since last year's roll-out of
our ambitious Master Plan, the board of directors have been busy
searching for ways to fund it. Spirit Mountain Community Fund responded
with a matching grant incentive: show community support by raising 90%
of the total funds needed, and SMCF would contribute the last $25,000.
The fundraising campaign kicked off at a Pine Grove Community potluck
in November, when Manzanita resident, Owen Nicholson won that
evening’s raffle and donated his winnings for the very first
$29 toward our goal. On Feb. 19TH in front of about 75 people at the
Pine Grove monthly potluck, Shelly Hanson, Executive Director of Spirit
Mountain Community Fund, presented members of the Board of
CART’M Recycling with the check for $25,000.
Jessi Just, CART’M Outreach and Education
coordinator, and Pine Grove board member, thanked our very generous
community for its overwhelming support of CART’M. Mark Beach,
Chairman of the Board at CART’M then presented Owen Nicholson
with a token gift and echoed our thanks for all the community.
The funds raised will be used to implement phase I of our
master plan, including construction of a new building, development of a
new yard debris collection area, construction of a portion of the new
ring road. The SMCF check will be earmarked for purchase of needed
material handling equipment. All phase I construction projects are
scheduled to be complete by Trash Bash, May 16, 2008 and new systems
will be unveiled in September.
New
(used) Pole Building:
Permit has been applied for and we hope to get this 40' x 60' item into
place ASAP. Without volunteer help it could cost over $30,000
precious dollars that we don't have so now's a chance for people to
test out our online donation feature. All safe and secure and
ready for those generous supporters!
At this point I'm hoping for a December or January ground
breaking. The foundation will probably take longer
to build than reconstructing the used building. The
bulk of the cost is also in the foundation as it had to be specially
engineered given that the earth underneath is an old garbage fill site.
Z-wall
Reconstruction:
These are the walls where people toss
there garbage from into the dumpsters. The County is the lead on this
and the schedule is to receive bids for the project in November and
then begin construction in February or March.
Grading
&
Drainage Plan: One item not mentioned in
the CART'M Master Plan is a Grading & Drainage Plan that the
County decided needed to be accomplished as a component of the overall
Master Plan. The County is the lead on this also and those
plans have been recently completed. Construction is tied to
the development of the new ring road. The schedule for that
road is entirely dependent upon material "showing up" from local
paving, sidewalk, and foundation demolition projects.
Traffic
Reorganization:
Over these winter months we plan to
implement a reorganized donation drop off plan which will have donation
traffic driving behind (south side) the existing building and unloading
in the area beside the addition (east end). The
goal of this plan is to relieve congestion in the recycling and trash
lanes. We regard this as an Phase 1 of the Master Plan
implementation until we have a loop road and new "Reuse Store" building
in place in which to house reuse sales exclusively. We
received a challenge grant of $25,000 from Spirit Mt. Community Fund to
help us raise the needed $75,000 for this project. Our Board
Chair, Mark Beach has been the lead on rallying and fundraising the
local $50,000 for this project. So far we are about 1/3 of
the way on that! YAY! and thank you!
Yard Debris:
The yard debris area should be completely reorganized over
the winter and will hopefully be managed by a subcontractor, Trails End
Recovery, of Warrenton. By "reorganized" I mean graded,
graveled, and separated into several bays in which customers will load
the different types of debris such as firewood, construction demolition
wood debris, shrub clippings, compostable matter, etc.
