Working at CARTM is challenging, fun and never, ever, boring. Our excellent employees provide customer service, operate heavy equipment, calculate fees, monitor and service the recycling line, run the cash register, sort, clean and price donated items, and make 1000 lb. bales of everything from tin cans to lawn chairs. We are so very proud of our staff! Read more to meet them!

    line

Janet Hamilton came to CARTM in 2006 as Assistant Director with over 30 years of non-profit administrative experience and a broad range of professional skills. She was promoted to Executive Director in 2008. Although Jan spent 30 years in Colorado, she is native to the northwest, has been in love with the north Oregon coast all her life and always planned to retire here.

  • Volunteers

    line

Our mighty volunteers are CARTM’s backbone - we couldn’t do as much as we do without them. Over 100 committed civilians show up - some regularly, some on-call, and some once a year - but show up they do, and they move mountains! Mountains of recyclable cans and bottles, mountains of linens, mountains of books, all in an effort to keep materials moving to where they can be best used and appreciated!

  • Board of Directors

    line

CARTM draws volunteers from a wide variety of disciplines to its Board of Directors. Although the board is responsible for the governance and policy-making of the organization, its most important contributions are visioning and holding the culture of CARTM. Board members support CARTM’s mission monetarily, and each volunteers time in at least one other capacity. Our directors serve a three-year term.

Visionary neighbors created CARTM in 1996 to handle the solid waste we generate as locally as possible so that as a community we take responsibility for what we produce and introduce in our region. We continue to work conscientiously to reduce waste. Cart’M is now governed by a board of directors, managed by an executive director, and operated by staff and volunteers.

CARTM taps deeply into the need to do something creative and positive about the waste generated in our own neighborhood; therefore support for CARTM crosses traditional boundaries. Tillamook County provides space for our facilities and Master Gardeners volunteer to manage our landscaping. Local businesses contribute money for operations and bring cans, bottles, cardboard, paper and construction materials for volunteers to bundle for recycling. Residents bring out-of-town guests to shop in the re-use store while they recycle household waste, and Nehalem Bay State Park campers and coast tourists wander in to see what we’re about. Local artists lead and attend our famed Trash Art Workshops and show their creations at our annual Trash Art Show. Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality permits our operations. The City of Manzanita approved our site plans in 1998 and 2007. Our local city governments are very supportive of CARTM's mission, and consider us a local gem.

It is important to us to include everyone to achieve success. Every CARTM program is open without bias to all members of our community - residents, second homeowners and visitors. We do not track the age, ethnic, disability, gender, sexual orientation or socioeconomic status of our staff, volunteers or customers. We each can contribute to sustainability regardless of status.
