CARTM is on a mission - leading our community to zero waste. To accomplish this, we operate a safe and convenient transfer station, recycling center and re-use store and encourage creative re-use of materials. We actively divert materials from the waste stream and encourage people to re-think waste: reduce, re-use, and recycle. We would like to become the first zero waste community in Oregon.

“Never doubt that a small band of committed citizens can change the world, indeed it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead

Thanks to the concerted efforts of committed citizens, CARTM envisions a community that takes action to reduce waste, takes responsibility for the waste it generates, and recovers value from all materials that pass through our waste-shed.

“CARTM is a model for how Oregonians can work cooperatively for a healthy, sustainable environment”, said Dick Pedersen, director of Oregon’s Department of Environmental Quality. It is our intention at CARTM to keep discovering new and interesting ways to work together as a community to get to zero waste. Outreach and education has many faces - younger citizens modeling behavior and old dogs learning new tricks. We try to reach them all!

CARTM evolved from a few spirited volunteers with a paper bin to a service organization with five-year strategic and master plans, operated by eleven employees and volunteers logging hundreds of hours each month. We provide the means to offer more recycling and re-use opportunities than any other operation in the state. Why? Because our community demands it.

Following recent natural and man-made catastrophes elsewhere, our community realized how quickly we can become isolated, and how critical it is to develop local resources. We have a distinct identity and pride of ownership in our artsy coastal culture. Together we creatively share in the sustainability of our towns and become a model for global well-being.
